Another Oscar nominee for animated short. Needless to say this NFB contender is a delight (I saw it a few weeks ago).

Chico and Rita UK trailer
The Oscar nominations have been announced. Chico and Rita have been nominated for best animated feature. It looks fabulous - the graphics make me think of Diego Rivera (not Cuban, I know) and make me want to know more of Cuban design.
I hope to see it in the upcoming weeks before the silly schmucks hand that statuette to someone else.

Madonna - Masterpiece (Lyrics On Screen)
Okay, after hearing Elton and his partner whining about Madonna's Golden Globe win for Best Original Song - Motion Picture I decided to listen for myself to see what the fuss was all about.
Elton is out to lunch.
I listened to all the songs that had been nominated. His was the weakest in my opinion. Too often these award shows, we forget that the point of a song in a movie is to evoke memories of the film afterwards. Elton John's "Hello Hello" for Gnomeo & Juliet is as memorable as any other dull and unnoteworthy children's cartoon.
Of the lot, "The Living Proof" for The Help, sung by Mary J. Blige was the only other song worth mentioning. But while soulful, for me it was yet another anthem for the oppressed - 5 years from now I will be hard pressed to remember what the song was for.
Which leaves us with Madonna. There's a reason why Madonna has been nominated 6 times for Original Song - she delivers the goods. You say I want a song about X and that's exactly what she gives you. She's no Cole Porter but the lyrics will match the topic, will be easy to remember and it will evoke the mood required. Madonna is no fool when it comes to getting good co-writers - plus they know what to expect.
Madonna is the frontman, plain and simple.

Thomas Quasthoff Retires - Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
I found this posting on NPR. Thomas Quasthoff is retiring from the stage due to illness.
I attended a concert of his in Toronto on a whim, after seeing him on Sixty Minutes. I spent the entire concert of the edge of my seat. I am so glad I gave into that whim.
The concert was predominantly lieder but it was his Negro Spirituals that always got me.

Gotye- Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra)- official film clip (HD)
Everynow and then I pop onto ITunes to see what drek is considered popular music. Well I was happy surprised by the work of Gotye. Think Sting meets Peter Gabriel meet Salvador Dali - oh, and I like the girl, Kimbra, too.
Brilliant video - enjoy.
