Okay, after hearing Elton and his partner whining about Madonna's Golden Globe win for Best Original Song - Motion Picture I decided to listen for myself to see what the fuss was all about.
Elton is out to lunch.
I listened to all the songs that had been nominated. His was the weakest in my opinion. Too often these award shows, we forget that the point of a song in a movie is to evoke memories of the film afterwards. Elton John's "Hello Hello" for Gnomeo & Juliet is as memorable as any other dull and unnoteworthy children's cartoon.
Of the lot, "The Living Proof" for The Help, sung by Mary J. Blige was the only other song worth mentioning. But while soulful, for me it was yet another anthem for the oppressed - 5 years from now I will be hard pressed to remember what the song was for.
Which leaves us with Madonna. There's a reason why Madonna has been nominated 6 times for Original Song - she delivers the goods. You say I want a song about X and that's exactly what she gives you. She's no Cole Porter but the lyrics will match the topic, will be easy to remember and it will evoke the mood required. Madonna is no fool when it comes to getting good co-writers - plus they know what to expect.
Madonna is the frontman, plain and simple.
